I forgot to mention, on the 4th June I watch a Panorama about peoples lives in the Favellas in Brazil during the build up of the World cup. Honestly, I felt so upset watching it, for those people that are suffering in poverty, yes I was extremely affected when I saw young children/teenagers selling themselves on the streets while their parents were out but even those caught up and involved in the drug trafficking. For those boys (the common gender to be involved) that is what they have been introduced to as the quickest and simplest way of earning money and for many it was money just to be able to supply food for their families. Boys as young as 14 dressed with their faces covered with balaclavas saying that they don't want this life all they want is enough money to be able to go and relax comfortably on the beach. How is that a life those youngsters should be involved in, which could be at least helped with some donations?so why spend so much on new stadiums which I'm pretty sure the world has built enough stadiums to hold a few football matches.
Fair enough football brings excitement for many but is it excitement that's going to cure world poverty?
It's all about greed! wanting to be the best and impress the most people, humans can survive with the short term disappointment of not getting a ticket for the 'prestigious' event. Humans can cope with watching football on TV in their own homes, in their home country. Yet those in the favellas' may not even have a TV they don't even own a substantial home that they can proudly call their own, with a mortgage of their own. Most likely they won't even have the money to buy a ticket for the World cup or perhaps even have the facilities to buy one.
Girls as young as nine are selling themselves on the dangerous streets of Brazil, they are being violently hurt and believing this is a way of life for them. Why can we not do something about this? Is this not more serious than putting on an 'impressive' show of football? Anyone of us could have been born into a family like that we are just lucky enough to have a nice home with luxuries at easy reach, think if that was you, your daily routine to sell yourself or be involved with the dangerous cycle of drug use or selling them.
They should be just beginning to enjoy their lives, enjoying the release of freedom, independence and maturing not thinking its already the end and time to give up.
Perhaps I am too sensitive, but watching those people live in those conditions caused me to feel upset and I couldn't turn it off because I felt so many would draw a blind eye to it and that is precisely what I would be doing if I turned that programme off. Can't we just think about those less fortunate than ourselves for once and help, instead or spending money just to impress!
